”But
seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be
given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33 NIV)
Sometimes one can see lovely stacks of
colorful yarn in various hues and colors both in the supermarket and in
needlecraft shops. Each yarn cone or bunch is so carefully rolled that it looks
like the yarn has intentionally grouped itself in different gradients or
strains in the display stand. I’ve discovered that the yarn cones are in fact
intentionally wound in a very orderly way. Consequently, it requires that one
begins by pulling on the ’correct end’ of the yarn. I have in fact had the
misfortune of pulling thread from the wrong end, and I can tell you, the new
bundle can become entangled in an unbelievable mess. If one has begun pulling
from the wrong end it may require several to untangle the threads.
It’s the same in
God’s Kingdom. Today’s Bible verse gives us clear instructions in how our lives
ought to be prioritized and the key word in establishing order is the word
’first’. Begin with seeking His Kingdom and all will be well. If we first chase
after ’all the other stuff’ it will be as though we begin by pulling from the
wrong end of the yarn cone. It will become one tangled web.
Prayer
Lord, You who know what the day ahead looks
like. Help me to seek Your Kingdom and righteousness first, before I attempt
anything else. Thank You for then allowing my day to flow in an orderly fashion
and without a lot of hassle that would have resulted if I’d begun on the wrong
end of things.
