August 11

”I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe…" (Ephesians 1:18-19 NIV)

Verbatim, Paul prays that God will give your hearts’ eyes light. Think about the illustration that God has created us with an eye in the heart. It must be because we are to have eye contact with Him!
In the Christian family shelter we worked a great deal focusing on parents’ eye contact with their babies. If the eye contact between the parent and child was dysfunctional something was wrong. Often our work began with a concentration on this. Eye contact is particularly important for the small child. Someone has said that a baby’s eyes are like two ’tentacles’ that are seeking another pair of eyes on which to fix their gaze. It’s as though the young child is drawing in emotional nourishment through the eye contact with mom or dad.
In the same way we, who are God’s children can draw in spiritual nourishment from our Heavenly Father through our heart’s eyes, in praise and prayer as we meet His loving gaze. And in that relationship we can see the hope, inheritance and His mighty strength.

Prayer
I want to be still in Your presence just now and allow myself to be affected by Your loving gaze. I want to turn my heart’s eyes to You and receive peace in Your embrace.
