July 18

”Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.” (Mark 15:15 NIV)

Pilate made a decision that lead to the most remarkable human act in history. Jesus died and Barabbas and all people since him are offered freedom and salvation.
Pilate had the human power to decide whether Jesus should live or should He die. And Pilate had the same human decision making that you and I, to do what is right or to do what he knew was wrong. We understand from the text that Pilate knew what the correct decision was. He knew Jesus was innocent. Nonetheless he made the wrong decision, because he wanted to satisfy the crowd.
Sometimes we Christians may need to ask if we are steered by the desire to do what’s right or perhaps we would rather do that which pleases others. Do we witness about Jesus when God’s Spirit nudges us or are we more inclined to be laid back and chat about any number of insignificant matters.

Prayer
Jesus, help me to obey Your voice as it speaks to me today. Help me to be more concerned about pleasing You than in pleasing others in my effort to become popular.
