"For
it is God's will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of
foolish men. Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for
evil; live as servants of God." (1 Peter 2:15-16 NIV)
We can never protect ourselves completely
from other people saying bad things about us. Sometimes the certainty of this
happening weighs us down and it’s not easy to wash away a bad reputation. But
other people can never stop us from doing what is good, and this is the
antidote that the Bible prescribes. Do good, be free - but do not use the
freedom to do evil, such as seeking revenge.
Plato also had
insight that the only remedy for defamation is a life that proclaims the
opposite of what is said. He said: "When
people talk bad about you. Live so that no one believes them."
If we live daily
in obedience to the Word of God and serve Him, he will defend us and watch over
us so that we will not be harmed.
Prayer
Jesus, help me to choose what is good today.
Help me to live my day so that others can see that I am your servant.
