March 9

"Those living far away fear your wonders; where morning dawns and evening fades you call forth songs of joy. You care for the land and water it; you enrich it abundantly. The streams of God are filled with water to provide the people with grain, for so you have ordained it. You drench its furrow sand level its ridges; you soften it with showers and bless its crops."  (Ps 65:8-10)

A friend shared that he had acted as the sitter one day for his little grandson. He had planned to prune his fruit trees that day, but doubted if he could do so with the child around. But to grandpa’s horror the grandchild offered to assist. Now, the grandchild was so small that any possible assistance became more of a hindrance. But grandfather was clever and gave the grandchild a small saw. While grandpa slaved away among the upper branches and sawed the mighty branches, the little boy was on the ground and sawed steadily and faithfully a small branch without very much happening. After a long period of silence while working intensively the boy said: ”Aren’t we having fun”? And, grandpa was forced to halt his work for a moment and bare a slight smile.
The story has many parallels with reference to our Christian life. Beyond all that we read in today’s Bible verses about God’s creative acts, we note that God works with man. He calls people to Himself. He saves thousands of people every day. He forgives people. He blesses and cleanses people. He heals people. He takes unto Himself those that are weak and poor. And somewhere amidst His mighty work we are allowed to be present. We actually don’t contribute much, but we are allowed to be there and we can say to God our Father ”aren’t we having fun” ?!

Prayer

Thank You Lord, for allowing me to be a part of Your mighty work. Help me today to faithfully perform the task you have given to me. Help me not to get in Your way. And help make me joyful because we are able to be together today, You and me.
