“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is
helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen." (Ephesians 4:29 NIV)
Just think if today we could keep true to the simple rule of only saying those things that build other’s esteem. Our words are so often only a reaction of what others have said or done. Our words are decided for us by others.
There is a key difference between reaction
and action. When we act, we are
ourselves in control. When we react
we allow others to control our actions. The Bible speaks to the weight of
controlling one’s tongue, in other words, to assume responsibility for what we
say. In James letter it’s written: ”If
anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his
tongue,… his religion is worthless.” (James1:26 NIV)
Prayer
Jesus help me to be exact in what I say today. Help me to not simply, without reflection, react to that which I meet; instead consciously choose words that build others up. Let me be a blessing to someone today.
