”…
people light a lamp and put it … on its stand, and it gives light to everyone
in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may
see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:15-16 NIV)
Mother Teresa has been attributed with the
following words:
-
The
good that you do will be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway.
-
Honesty
and sincerity means people might deceive you. – Be sincere and honest anyway.
-
That
which has been built up over a period of years can be destroyed in a blink of
an eye. It makes no difference – keep creating.
-
Man is
often unwise, illogical and egocentric. It makes no difference – love them.
In Matthew 6 Jesus challenges His disciples
to perform various acts in secret:
Give alms (Matt. 6:4), pray (Matt. 6:6) and fast (Matt 6:18). And the Father
who can see what is done in secret promises to reward us for this.
The driving
forces for a Christian cannot be the admiration of others or their approval,
but that what we do pleases God. When we make an effort to live in that way our
light will also shine before man. The Father will be glorified and we will
receive our reward from He who sees what is done in secret.
Prayer
Jesus, help me today to follow Your leading
to do good, even if it seems useless. Thank you that I need not be approved by
any other than You.
