”Live
as children of light - for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness,
righteousness and truth -and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do
with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them." (Ephesians 5:9-11)
We live in postmodern times, and a telling
sign is that most people no longer believe that there exists an absolute truth
worth seeking. Instead every individual attempts to form their own little truth
– a composite of all that fits in to their own wishes and judgment.
In the past one
could disagree on what truth looked like, but one continued to seek in various
ways for Truth with a capital ’T’. Today when most have abandoned the thought
that there exists an absolute truth, many insist that, ’that which feels right
for me’ must be the truth and this in turn results in a mass of individual mini
truths. In the meantime, when one denies the existence of an absolute truth,
one’s own ’truth’ with a small ’t’ becomes logic’s springboard. …a logical
somersault is just made. If I say that
there exists no absolute truth, I have just defended it here, namely by stating
that it’s an absolute truth that absolute truth doesn’t exist.
I think Jesus had
it right. Jesus is the expression for God’s absolute truth. But this world’s
lord, the devil has blinded “the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see
the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.” (II
Cor.4:4 NIV)
Our time’s
blindness lies in the fact that people no longer seek God’s truth, but instead seek
after and see how their own little truth fits and therefore are rootless and
have gone astray without a solid ground on which to stand. Today’s Bible verse
encourages us not to partake in, but rather expose these acts of darkness.
Prayer
Lord, let the light that You have lit in me
shine bright so that all the acts of darkness are exposed where I will walk.
