The
truth shall make you free.” (John 8:32 NIV)
Cardinal Joseph Bernardin, a Catholic
priest in the USA,
received the shocking message that he’d been accused of sexual abuse against
one of his earlier students. He was later released and reconciled with the
young man who had been fooled to make a false accusation for this deplorable
charge.
In his book, ”The Truth Was My Only Defense” Bernardin
describes his experiences during the months when he was presented by the media
and the whole of the American establishment as a disgrace, who not only
committed a sexual offense but who also failed the church and his vocation. He
knew he was innocent, but all others believed he was guilty. To read about his
turmoil and powerlessness is gripping. However, throughout his story there is a
red thread, his conviction that the truth will in the end make him free – which
in fact it did.
Perhaps you too
have been falsely accused for something? Perhaps you experienced that others
stood firm in their conviction, that you are a certain way, or that you have
done something, that you know isn’t true? You should know that the truth is
your only defense and it’s only the Truth that can make you free.
Prayer
Lord, sometimes it seems that evil triumphs.
Sometimes it seems that lies and violence wins the day. But thank You Jesus,
that the truth is always victorious!
