”No
temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he
will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted,
he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13 NIV)
I have always been fascinated by sailing.
What a remarkable experience it is to be driven by the wind at sea. Imagine the
mighty power that is at force when a big sailing ship sets its sails catching
the wind.
It’s not
difficult to understand how this functions when one has favorable winds.
However, what confuses me is that it’s actually possible to sail against
headwinds. It takes a little more time, and in that one has to ’tack’ (traverse across the medium), one
must know how to trim the sails in order that they capture the wind just so.
This principle
also applies to the Christian life. When contrary forces come we need to
remember that we can carry on even if it takes a bit more time, because we have
to traverse. It’s then that it’s important to keep the goal in sight, because
if we are only wind driven we will never reach our goal.
Prayer
Lord, help me to keep the goal in sight
whether I experience favorable or headwinds today.
