”You
need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive
what he has promised.” (Hebrew 10:36 NIV)
The story is told of a young man, we will
call him Abe, and early in life he had the ambition to be elected as a Member
of Parliament. When that hope went away he decided he’d try his hand at
commerce. Again he failed miserably, and during the following seventeen years
he spent considerable time attempting to repay a debt incurred by an
incompetent associate on his behalf.
From there his
next attempt was to be elected to the USA Congress, but again he was defeated.
He was elected to the States Senate but was defeated for speaker. He was then
defeated for re-nomination for Congress and lost by a wide margin. He then
offered himself as a candidate for the post of Vice President. He lost once
again and in 1858 when he sought the Presidency he was defeated by a man named Douglas.
However, at the
end he won, and maybe you have guessed by now that the story concerns one of
the USA’s
most celebrated Presidents ever, Abraham Lincoln. He accomplished this on the
basis that he never gave up. Instead he was brave enough to try again, to seek
the vision that was implanted in his mind.
Prayer
Jesus, forgive me that I find it so easy to
give up when facing the slightest head-wind. Help me to learn endurance from
Abraham Lincoln. Help me to dare to try again, help me to do Your will. One day
then, I will receive that which You have promised.
